Physical and Health Education,
SJKC Chee Tong

Cikgu Ching Yun Ming, Headmaster of SJKC Chee Tong in Johor, understands deeply the role of a principal in shaping a school’s culture. Having once failed Bahasa Melayu himself, he knows the barriers his students face in mastering the national language which could hinder their ability to thrive in secondary school. Determined to change this, he has built a school culture where every child is supported to overcome such challenges and to see themselves as capable learners. Under his leadership, initiatives like the trilingual handbook SANYU BAODIAN, targeted intervention programmes, and one-to-one mentorship transformed student outcomes dramatically, with Year 4 pass rates rising from 29% to 77% in just two years. Central to this transformation is Cikgu Ching’s efforts to weave the importance of Bahasa Melayu into the fabric of school life, not just in classrooms, but across assemblies, discussions, and everyday interactions. At the same time, his collaborative approach with teachers ensures that they feel valued, motivated, and empowered to innovate in their teaching.
