Yew Ko Woo
Visual Art,
SMK Methodist Sibu
For over 30 years, Cikgu Yew has taught Visual Arts to students who often did not choose the subject out of passion, but out of circumstance. Refusing to let them remain disengaged, he transformed his classroom into a space of hope and creativity. To spark interest, he created MYSVKit, a gamified toolkit with board games, cards, and reward systems, that built confidence and mastery even among passive learners. Beyond school walls, he spearheaded community mural projects and charity exhibitions such as “Warna-Warna Harapan”, raising funds for underprivileged students. He later established Bengkel Impian, a fully equipped creative space for those without access to art materials at home. The results were transformative: students began competing in national art contests, and revitalised their school’s Visual Arts Club, later recognised as “The Most Inspirational Art Club in Malaysia.” In 2021, his students achieved a historic cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.97, the school’s highest ever in the subject for STPM.
